I have started working on a few more breeding projects. I added a trio of chinchilla Satins to cross to my Satin Angoras to get better commercial bodies. I also have bred a Californian doe to a French Angora buck, to help improve type and hopefully add the Californian variety to my Angoras. I'm also working on otter and agouti Lionheads, I have some very nice quality Lions to use in these projects. I'm hoping to start adding more guides on evaluating, showing, and identifying colors to this blog soon! Here are some photos of some of the project animals:

Well, this happened. Meet Della's Wow, Himalayan doe. She is super friendly and will be fun to show! We now have 7 breeds.
Attention! I will no longer be selling any Angoras as pets. I will still sell woolers occasionally. This is due to the care they need for their coats. I'm very sorry for any inconvenience this causes. I will still occasionally sell pets in my other breeds.
Supplies needed: - sharp pair of scissors - plastic shopping bag (for scrap wool, I use it for felting) - plastic sandwich bag (for prime wool) - wide tooth dog comb - seam ripper (for mats close to skin) - nail clippers (I usually trim tails at this time) - carpet square and flat surface to work on. Wooly's Jade is our demonstration rabbit. She is a broken chinchilla French Angora doe. To start, set your carpet squares and rabbit on your table. I use shopping bags for scrap wool, basically anything too short, matted, or stained to be used for spinning. The scrap wool can be used for felting (needle or wet), stuffing, ect. The sandwich bag is used for the prime wool, the long, clean fibers on the back. Try to lay these in the same direction when putting it in the bag. Have your rabbit pose or sit still. I usually start clipping at the back of the neck. Grab the ends of a small section of fiber, and lightly pull up. You want to straighten the fiber, but not pull the skin up. Run your fingers to the base of the fiber, where it meets skin. Cut right above the skin, using your other hand to keep track of where the skin is. Set the fiber in one of the bags. Continue using this method for clipping, being careful to not cut the fiber a second time or the rabbit. As you are cutting, you may cut some uneven sections. You can go back over those later to even them out. Be extra careful around the sides, tail, and chin. I clip all the fiber on my French and Satins, except under the chin, on the belly (that's short anyways), tassels (if they have them), and the tail. English, I clip everything except the tassels and face furnishings, unless they are matted. Always flip your rabbit over and check around their tail/vent/back of hind legs. These are the spots that will get matted. With English, do sanitary clips around the vent, to help keep them clean. Troubleshooting: Mats If you have mats away from the skin, just clip them out. These should be thrown away, or used for felting. If it is near the skin, clip the fur around it. Then take a seam ripper, and going between the skin and mat, start breaking small sections of the wool keeping the mat next to the skin. Go slow and do small sections at a time. Cut the rabbit If the wound is bleeding badly, put pressure on the wound, and take to the vet (in all the times I have nicked a rabbit, I have never made it bleed badly, so you probably went pretty deep). If it is not bleeding or barely, carefully trim the wool around the wound, and apply non medicated (no pain relief) antibiotic ointment to the wound. The pain relief medication can stop a rabbits heart, so make sure it's the right stuff. White flakey dandruff If your rabbit has a lot of dandruff or irritated skin, it may have mites. Mites usually are around the shoulders and lower hindquarter. To treat it, give the rabbit 0.018cc/ml of liquid Ivermection per lb of body weight orally. *Note*- I am not a veterinarian, any medication or dosages I have listed are at your own risk. I am not responsible for any problems. I hope this helps you, if you have any questions, you can message me! I am working on a broken Satin Angora project. I have broken bucks that are 3/4 French Angora, and 1/4 Satin Angora. I will be using the best buck and breeding him back to a Satin Angora. I will continue to keep the best broken back out of each litter until I have show quality, purebred Satin Angoras.
None of the animals from this program will be available until I deem them of appropriate type. Photos are of the bucks, a broken blue (snowballed) and a broken opal. We currently have 12 litters:

My goal is correctly colored, show quality Chinchillas. Very few rabbits will be available from this project. My program currently consists of:
Agouti Alliance Stormy (2nd photo). DM Jr. Chinchilla buck (A_ B_ cchdc D_ E_). This is my herd buck for this project. Agouti Alliance Gabriella (1st photo). DM Sr. Chinchilla doe. This is my foundation doe for this project. She has been bred to Stormy once and threw a Chinchilla and a REW. Wooly's Alyss (3rd photo). DM Possible VC Black Sr. doe. One of my favorite brood does. Even though she is a bit long in type and bigger, she has amazing mane and great width. She has been bred to Stormy once and threw 3 Chestnuts (1 VM). Hello! I am working on starting my Otter Lionhead program. I hope to get some does bred to a Black Otter Netherland Dwarf buck soon. I will be using line breeding (breeding father X daughter or mother X son) to get the otter color in my Lionheads.
Please do not ask if you can buy one, they will be listed when I deem them quality enough to sell. I do not have an estimated time when they will be available. Just thought that I would get that out of the way. Any does bred should give me a variety of colors including blacks, torts, and otters/foxes (tort otter). The kits will be single maned. The kits will hopefully be mostly pure Lionhead within a few generations, however if I am having type issues I make do another cross to a Netherland Dwarf or Holland Lop. The goal of this program is to produce purebred, show quality Lionheads of otter coloring. Photo of the buck, Reilly's Taz. |
